Child Therapy
also known as
Play Therapy
Children process and verbalize information and emotions much differently than adults. Play therapy is an evidenced based approach to help children feel safe, and process events and feelings that may cause them to:
Behave aggressively at school or at home
Worry about their safety or performance
Be self-critical
Isolate from family or friends
Have difficulty socializing
Have difficulty concentrating
To adults, play therapy looks very similar to usual play, but the child gets to have control over what they do, what they play, and how they direct the play. Through their self-directed play, they are able to show how they view themselves and the world around them. This helps children feel comfortable, and helps them learn:
Decision making skills
Self-esteem skills
Trust
Self-soothing
Emotional intelligence (the ability to identify their emotions and manage them)
Empathy
Limits and Consequences
